This is an extremely well-researched post written to help us cope with these new GDPR rules. Well done, Cat!
From 25th May 2018 a new EU regulation comes into law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Many of us have already heard of this new regulation, it was officially passed in 2016 but only becomes law from 25th May 2018. The new regulation is a good thing for anyone living in the EU as it gives you more control and transparency over how your personal data is kept and used by businesses and different companies who provide goods and services, but did you know that as a blogger you also need to comply with new GDPR rules, even if you’re not an EU citizen?

Seems far too complicated for my weekly blog with no website to its name.

I hope that WordPress comes up with some kind of widget to add to our blogs just to cover us. I am unsure what ordinary bloggers ought to be doing about this.

Thanks for passing on the post and I agree it is very well researched. By having a blog (albeit a simple one like mine) some personal information is passed on so it would be good to have some guidance from WordPress on a privacy page.

Yes, I agree. So far we have had nothing from them.

I read the article, but does this mean that US bloggers have to add a privacy policy page as well?

I don’t think so, Elizabeth. I believe it just concerns those in the European Union. xx

Thanks, Clare. I did some research and everything I read said that WordPress was compliant with the little popup at the bottom of the screen. So guess we’re good. Over here at least
. 🙂

Yes WP’s policy appears to be fine and the cookie banner working okay now 🙂 🙂

WordPress is now compliant so no need to worry but to answer your question about the US or other foreign sites the answer is they do need a privacy policy if they have users from the EU on their blog. The new GDPR rules are about protecting EU citizens rights so technically any website in the world that expects EU traffic has to comply with this new law. Not sure how the world is coping after this news but I’ve heard some US websites have shut down temporarily to make sure their compliant! Thank goodness our blogs are taken care of now 🙂

Functionality on the WP app is different from the website, so I’d completely forgotten that I would have access to a commenters email address.
As an interim measure, I could change my greeting to let potential commenters know that their email address will be passed on to me. That said, if they emailed me, I’d have their email address, and I’m sure I don’t need a disclaimer for that.

I honestly think most of this is really unnecessary. Most of us know that we pick up cookies wherever we go and we leave data behind too. A widget to add to our side bar is all that is needed. Using the WP app is a totally different experience to using the website!

After commenting on your posts, I went into the WP website and was satisfied with what I found. I can’t relate the info back as I’ve already forgotten but it seems the privacy policies are clear and readily available.
GDPR has meant I can clear out my inbox 😊. I should perhaps have made the effort myself to unsubscribe to stuff but the plethora of emails was overwhelming…. Signing a petition and then automatically being put on a mailing list, for example.

I noticed WP has updated its privacy policy and I think it is good enough too. I have cleared out loads of rubbish from my inbox as well! 😀

Thanks for passing along this useful information, hopefully WordPress will be able to come up with something that let’s us comply with the new laws without us having to learn all the ins and outs of compliance.

It’s a pleasure, Jerry. I am sure you are grateful you don’t need to do all this stuff!

Thank you, Clare! I hope WP does come up with something soon that covers all of us.

This is all so confusing–I’m dealing with it because I sell on Etsy, too, and have been willing to sell to EU buyers. Ai yi! But thanks for the help!

Poor you! WP have updated their privacy info and the cookie banner appears to be working properly now. That is probably sufficient for all our needs.

Interesting link and I read her privacy policy but agree seems complicated and think it’s WordPress that uses all the data. Am not sure I really want to know how many visitors per day!
