fish and chips, seaside, Southwold, Suffolk, The Little Fish and Chip Shop, The Sole Bay Fish Company
Elinor has been extolling the fish and chips her father buys for her when they visit Southwold together. She tells me I would really like them as the fish is beautifully cooked with a thin crispy batter and the chips are not at all greasy.
She needed a new photograph for the (age) 26 to 30 railcard she was applying for and for the separate ID card to be used when we vote in a few days time. We thought we could go to the nearest photobooth which is at Morrison’s supermarket in Beccles, eleven miles away, get the photo done and then go to Southwold for lunch. Last Thursday was the ideal day to do it as Richard was going cycling with his friend John and they always have lunch out together. The forecast was for a dry but windy morning and then rain showers in the afternoon.
We set off at 10.30 am, got to Beccles just after 11.00 and Elinor used the photobooth. We then drove to Southwold and arrived at midday. The morning had been glorious with bright sunshine and beautiful blue sky. The wind was a very strong and cold easterly and this was particularly noticeable on the coast! We parked at the Pier carpark and walked along the front towards the town. The tide was in and the sea very rough so Elinor decided not to walk on the beach or even the promenade but along the upper road at the top of the cliff.
We noticed quite a large piece of driftwood had been thrown up by the sea next to the groyne. If you look closely you will see that it is part of the trunk of a long-dead tree. The woman in the ochre-yellow coat has her hood up against the blast of the wind. We too, had our winter coats on and hoods up!
Ten minutes walking brought us to the road into the town and the ‘Little Fish & Chip Shop’ in East Street. Here is a link to the shop. You will see from the link that this shop is part of the Sole Bay Fish Company which has a restaurant and wet fish shop at the harbour.
The shop is very small with extremely limited seating; one isn’t really expected to ‘eat in’ here. Our order for ‘two haddock and chips’ was taken and we were given pagers which would bleep when the food was ready. Some people go off and do their shopping and others wait on benches provided in the side alley next to the shop. We decided to wait.
There is a wisteria arbour strung with lights and lobster pots and in the summer the shade under the wisteria must be welcome. The little lights shining in the evening as one waits for one’s food to be cooked must be very pleasant. As we waited in the chilly alley we saw that the wisteria was just coming into leaf and there were flower buds appearing.
Collen and Clare, the shop you can see on the opposite side of East Street has managed to survive the pandemic. It is a shop I might go to if I had a special occasion to buy clothes for.
At last, after fifteen minutes wait, our lunch was ready. All freshly cooked and looking very good! We added a little salt to the fish and chips before we left and went to find a bench to sit on while we ate.
Elinor was quite right. I did enjoy my fish and chips and how often does one get parsley and a slice of lemon with take-away F&C? The key to good fish and chips is frying in lard. So many shops these days fry in vegetable oil but it does tend to make the food so greasy and the batter soft. I understand that many people do not wish to eat animal fats or pork products and lard is not particularly good if one is worried about cholesterol. However, I have take-away fried fish and chips very rarely and a treat now and again is extremely welcome.
By the time we had finished eating, clouds were beginning to appear. I had a small purchase to make in the stationers before we made our way back to the car. With the cloud quickly covering the sun and blue sky and the wind becoming even stronger it was a cold walk and we had to bend forward into the wind to get along. Fortunately, we managed to get all the way home and I’d even made myself a cup of tea by the time the rain started. Richard arrived home from his cycle ride shortly after that only having got a little damp.
I hope you enjoyed your visit to Southwold!

A well timed visit. Nothing like a brisk briney breeze and fish and chips to put some zing in your day🙂

Thank you! It was extremely well timed in more ways than one. Richard has just tested positive for covid for the first time this evening and I am sure we are all in for it now! 😮

Hopefully COVID is kind and leaves quickly. Thinking of you x

I have heard of many folks getting Covid here in the Boston area… but thanks to having been vaccinated, they have not ended up in the hospital. Some have taken Paxlovid and then had a rebound case, however. So I hope Richard can take it easy and recover thoroughly! And I hope you don’t get it…

We are all up-to-date with our vaccines and this strain of Covid hasn’t blunted his sense of smell, taste or appetite! Thank you for your concern ❤

Haha! Vinegar was on offer but sadly I can’t have it now (too acidic!) and my daughter doesn’t like it. Thank you Trevor.

Fish and Chips at the seaside! Perfect! I hope Richard recovers soon and keeps the virus to himself.

Mmmmmmmm – the fish and chips look lovely, though my choice would have been cod if they had it. Difficult to find up here as Blackpool seems to prefer haddock – quite understandable when you consider that’s the main catch landed at Fleetwood just up the coast.

Thank you Richard. Yes, they did have cod and several other types of fish. If ever you are back in the area I would definitely recommend this shop.

Sounds like you had a lovely time together, and that east coast can be very bracing, can’t it! Your lunch looks great, and for some reason I’m now feeling very hungry 😊

Seaside fish n chips are just the best. And nothing nicer than eating them with a sea view. The trouble is I always want a knife to go with my little plastic fork!
Sorry about the cold weather, thankfully it didn’t hamper your trip.
Oh, dear! I’m sorry to read about Richard’s Covid. One consolation is that today’s variants of the disease are less debilitating than the original, though they still affect everyone differently.
It’s amazing how much information is learnt at the Covid clinic.
So, Richard, The best advice I can pass on is to get plenty of rest, both in mind and body and don’t rush back into activities too quickly when you start to feel better.
Hope you stay well Clare. 🙂

Thank you so much, Sue and as someone who has suffered so long with Long Covid your advice will be and should be heeded. Richard is fretting that I am doing all the work and he can’t help and says that if I become ill (I am immuno-suppressed) he’ll feel so guilty. Poor man!
I was pleased that our fish and chips came not only with a wooden fork but a wooden knife too! What luxury! 😀

The fish and chips did look good. There is nothing to beat buying fish and chips at the seaside when the fish is fresh. Sorry about the COVID, most annoying.

I always love being near the sea and the sound of it, even if it is a little too breezy and cold and I love the photos of the sea. There’s just something lovely for me about being near the sea, and it sounds like you had a lovely time despite the chill. I’ve never heard of being paged to get your food order, lol, but I suppose it’s good if there’s a bit of a wait so you can do something else if you want to. Sorry about your husband getting ill as I’ve read from some of the other comments. I hope he recovers soon and that it’s only a mild case. ❤ 🙂

Thank you very much, Cat! I am very fortunate to live so near to the coast. My younger daughter finds the seaside soothing and it always calms her anxiety. Richard first noticed symptoms of Covid on Sunday evening and he was quite unwell on Monday but he hasn’t got any worse and we hope that by next weekend he will be feeling much better. I have symptoms now. I tested this morning and the result was inconclusive but I feel pretty rough this evening and I’m sure when I test tomorrow it will be positive 😦 Oh dear! I am supposed to be going to an important meeting on Saturday and I promised to bake something for the village May Day Fete. 😮 😀 xxx

I know! It’s going on and on! His brother suggested he has been re-infected by either me or our daughter. What a terrible thought! It could go on for months that way Haha! We aren’t too unwell, just tired with a cough and this virus variant is mainly like a heavy head cold. Thank you for your concern, Cat xxxx

Wow, that was quite a piece of fish! There’s nothing like fish at the seashore. It’s bound to be fresh and it always tastes better than it does anywhere else. Our seashore is a two hour drive away so I haven’t been there in years, but I still dream about those fried clams!
I hope all of you breeze through covid with hardly a sniffle!

Thank you so much, Allen. We are coping with the virus, which is unpleasant but not as dreadful as it was even a year ago. We will be glad to be rid of it.
You must definitely make an expedition to the seashore and have some of those fried clams!

Fried clams is all I’ve thought about since reading your post. Covid shut down a lot of restaurants in this area, so they’re actually hard to get here now.
I hope you’re all on the road to recovery. I had three what I would call “bad days” with it and then I slowly got better over time. I’ll pass a second time!

Fish & chips is one of my favorite meals out, too! It sounds like you all had a good day out, and I am glad you avoided the shoreline in rough surf. What we call “sneaker” waves over here can wash one out to sea very quickly, and it happens every so often.

Firstly, it’s so nice to see you back. I have missed your blog posts. Secondly, what a lovely trip out and while I’ve been a vegetarian for a long time, it must confess the sight of fish from “fish and chips” always takes me back. It’s the one thing I still get cravings for. 😀

It is a long while since I have been to Southwold. When I was a kid we used to go to Walberswick in summer and I always remember the six spot burnet moths there. My grandad would always refuse to eat fish and chips fried in oil – we are talking the 1980s and in Oulton Broad. I agree that if you are going to have a treat you might as well have the full-fat version. There is a legendary fish and chip shop not far from here – The Saltee Chipper at Kilmore Quay – and the queues are horrific – I have waited an hour before now, but worth it now and then.

Thank you so much for commenting. I am also pleased that it isn’t just me that thinks fish and chips taste better when not cooked in oil! An hour’s wait for food is a long wait but if the food is really good it is probably time well spent.
I haven’t been to Walberswick during the summertime for a while because of the crowds. The last time was about seven years ago when we visited during the evening. I haven’t seen a burnet moth in years! There are many fewer moths than there used to be.

You are right about there being fewer moths about these days and fewer bees this year for some reason – it may be the cold, wet spring. More butterflies this week, perhaps because of the better weather.
