This is just a quick post and an update on my previous one to tell you that Dunwich Heath has been on fire since yesterday afternoon. Many people have been evacuated and the fire service still have no idea when they will be able to get the blaze under control.

I have been absent, yet again from WordPress for which I apologise. I had my operation on my finger last Thursday and will have the ten or eleven stitches out next Wednesday. I spent a week preparing for the operation, doing a number of chores around the house so that I wouldn’t worry too much about the mess, post-op. This hasn’t worked! Even though the wound is small I have been surprised at how much it has impacted on my life. I obviously use my middle finger more often than I thought I did!

I’ve seen the news reports and the destruction is awful. It is only three weeks after you shared lovely photos of your day there, and they are now just a memory. So very sad. Take care.

Thank you, Clive. We are all very sad and extremely concerned for the people who live in the area. The loss of wildlife will be extremely great; the poor creatures have very little chance of escape.

It’s terrible, isn’t it. I hope the locals can get through it unscathed, though it is sad to see the poor wildlife suffer.

I watched the News report this evening with some concern. Here’s hoping that the breeze died down and that the Emergency Services soon manage to get it under control. Hope you progress towards restored dexterity soon.

Thank you, Richard. Elinor has been giving us updates and told me a few minutes ago that the fire services say they are progressing well and that a number of fire engines are joining them from London. My dexterity will be restored once I get the stitches removed. Not that I look forward to that very much!

I had a carpal tunnel operation recently and found just how much a hand has to do that you don’t normally think about. You have my sympathy.

Thank you, Suzanne. Yes, the fire is still burning but under control now I am happy to say. My hand is also feeling much better and I hope for a less lumpy finger for a time!

Oh my word. Yes, the poor creatures – I saw a video today of horses running down a village street in France, after being let out of their enclosures.
To think you were just there, Clare! At least they’re on the shore, with plenty of water on hand.

I have been watching the fires and thinking about you. Eleven stitches are a lot to get into one finger. Sometimes my arthritis flares up in a single finger, usually the middle finger, and it can result in my losing the ability to use my entire hand and make it difficult to use the arm – it seems like it should be a minor inconvenience but it’s not an easy thing to cope with so I hope your recovery goes well.

Thank you so much Simon. I am pleased to say I am recovering very well and am looking forward to having the stitches out and being able to get on with things as usual. The surgeon worked marvels on my lumpy finger and I am sure that I will have no trouble with it for some time to come. I do keep forgetting I should keep it dry and not use it very much! I hope Julia has fully recovered now from her dreadful accident.

It’s easy to forget not to use a finger – it’s automatic.
Julia seems to have recovered fully, though she admitted last week that she doesn’t like being amongst the big pots in Garden Centres when she goes with my sister.

A minor operation still makes life less easy than before, Clare. Hope your wound will heal soon.
I read your last blog post, which was about the tour you and your husband took to Dunwich Heath. This summer has witnessed a couple of heatwaves globally, my country not excluded. There are at least 3 reports of the blaze on EADT today, and BBC has had a full coverage. It seems that there has been unusually less rainfall this year in East Anglia. That, added to the heatwaves, might have sparked the atrocious fires. One report predicts that it might take 20 years for the heath to fully grow back. Hopefully, the local fire service will get the fire contained and extinguished as soon as possible.

Thank you very much. Yes, it will take a long time to get the heath back to what it used to be. It is heart-breaking to think of all the little creatures that lost their lives in the fire. Fortunately, no people were killed and no properties lost. Thank you too, for your good wishes for my recovery. I am feeling much better.

Thank you, Derrick. I was surprised at how many there are. The surgeon was absolutely wonderful and to be able to talk to him while the operation was on-going and to have a laugh at his jokes was a pleasant surprise. I was so sorry to read that Jackie had her operation cancelled at the last minute. ❤

The news of both the fire and your finger wound is not good and I hope the fire will be controlled soon and that you will regain the use of your finger before long. It seems that much of Europe is experiencing Africa-type weather this summer!

Thank you, Anne. I hear that the fire is still burning but it has been brought under control. I am so sad when I see what the area has been brought to, knowing the diversity of birds, plants, animals and insects it had. It will be many years before it regenerates to the state it was in before the fire. Fortunately, no lives have been lost and no properties damaged. My finger on the other hand (pun intended) is looking and feeling much better and I can’t wait until the stitches are removed on Wednesday. I keep forgetting that I am meant to keep it dry and not use it too much!

Thank you, Matthew. I had completely forgotten about poor WGS’s long walk over the heath! I had to search out my copy of The Rings and reread it. I love that book; and what a pleasure it must have been to have had conversations with him!

It is only when we have an injury or discomfort that we realise how much every single part of our bodies are used on a daily basis. I hope your finger is healing well, and that by now you have regained your ability to function without any issues, Clare.

Thank you so much, Jolandi. My finger is healing quickly but still a little tender. Having the stitches taken out last week made a big difference, as you can imagine. I have carefully begun to do heavy housework and a little gardening! Xx
